ORIGINATES FROM A VOLCANO

Basalt is a volcanic rock. It forms from magma, which can originally be found in the upper mantle of the Earth, until the volcano throws it out onto the surface of the Earth. In the form of lava as a fiery, liquid, thick and easily-flowing mass, basalt cools down to form impressive hexagonal columns. Basalt layer covers almost the entire crust of the Earth and the floor of the ocean. It is usually dark in its appearance and it is a great heat insulator.

FROM OTHER PLANETS

What is surprising are the dark spots that are visible on the surface of the Moon. Actually, these spots are lunar seas – territories formed by floods of basalt. The exotic textures of basalt can also be found farther afield – they form a large part of the upper surfaces of Mars and Venus. The most active basalt eruptions can be observed on Jupiter’s moon Io.

BASALT

Basalt fibre is a special material obtained by melting basalt stone at approximately 1500 oC (2730 oF). By pulling it through nozzles, basalt stone threads are acquired. Basalt fibre has a high flexibility module, resulting in excellent strength and durability of the material. It has a lot of advantages, compared to other materials used in furniture production.

Technical advantages of basalt:

- High technical durability
- Resistant to chemicals
- Resistant to high temperature fluctuations
- Water-resistant
- Noise-dampening
- Good thermal insulation
- Resistant to salty sea water
- Resistant to UV radiation
- Dielectric (non-conductive)
- Easy to maintain
- Environmentally-friendly

USEFUL ON THE EARTH

The first attempt to create basalt fibre succeeded in 1923 in the USA. After World War II, it was used in Europe and the Soviet Union, particularly in the field of military and aviation technologies. By 1995, only a few people knew about basalt fibre, because it was classified as a secret. Basalt fibre was later launched for wider use for civil purposes and in construction. It is also used as a fireproof textile for the space and automotive industry.

HAND MADE

The special weaving technique, through the use of which MANUGI products are created, has quite specific demands – no such device has yet been invented, which produces the furniture automatically. Therefore, it is made solely by the hands of our skillful experts from the beginning to the end. The personal approach of the experts makes the weaving of the furniture unlike anything else. It makes each design unique, the details - different, and the weaving pattern - inimitable.
